How did Bake Now! come about?

Bake Now! is a school project at Murdoch University which was part of the ICT367 unit assignment requirement, we are given a theme of "Serious Games" and among our group, we have common interests in Baking, so we settled on creating a baking simulator game as our game design.

As also at the same time, in the current global situation when facing the pandemic that is COVID-19 during this game’s development timeline, we noticed some trends where people who are interested in home baking. The game was conceptualized and developed, targetted at who are interested in baking or don't want to spend too much time or money to understand baking. It also has to be on WebXR ready to be available online and able to be also played in VR(virtual reality) mode.

As there is a disparity in technical skills in game development among my group as my unit has students that came from other degree majors, I took the opportunities on multiple roles as 3D Modeler & Animator, Lead Level Designer, and Lead Game Designer to keep the project on track within the skill level we have in the group.

What I did for old level design:

BN5_1.PNG

As for the level design, I immediately used royalty-free assets which is a ready-made kitchen model to block out the level in Unity 3D to come out how the player is going to traverse the game level, writing down which area belongs to what purpose shown in the image above, taking note what we wanted in the game scene.

What I doing currently for level design(Working in Progress):

As for the level design, I am currently adding my own self made props instead of royalty-free ones, using Universal Render Pipeline in Unity 3D to achieve better lighting and aesthetics also referring to more references to various bakery kitchens, and also doing changes to the flow of the gameplay as well as using visual guides to let the player know what is going on.
